Normal heart at rest

Diastole is the term used to describe the resting phase of the heart.

During normal diastole, the heart chamber known as the left ventricle fills completely with oxygen-rich blood.

On the next heartbeat, this blood is pumped into the a large artery called the aorta and out to the rest of the body.
