While significant progress has been made throughout the past few decades against heart disease, it is still a very scary thing to realize that many people who die of a heart attack or other heart-related complications show no symptoms, and it remains unclear as to why some people suffer from sudden cardiac arrest.

1. Follow the standard prevention guidelines.
According to the American Heart Association these guidelines are: Don't smoke, be more active, and make good nutritional choices.

3. Know your risk.
Find out your Framingham risk score, which gives you the odds of a heart-related death within the next 10 years.
4. Get a family history.
Genetics is a risk factor that cannot be modified. But knowing if heart disease runs in your family may help to plan and prevent it from happening to you.
5. Know the symptoms of heart problems.
It isn't just chest pain.
6. Learn CPR
While you cannot perform CPR on yourself, you may be able to help others in an emergency situation when EMS cannot get to the area fast enough.
